Evaluation of Multimode Coupled Bridge Response and Equivalent Static Wind Loading

چکیده
This study addresses recent developments on the evaluation of multimode coupled bridge response and modeling of equivalent static wind loading on bridges when subjected to strong winds. First, the coupled bridge flutter is studied with an emphasis placed on the participation of structural modes in flutter, not only based on their amplitudes in flutter motion, but more importantly, by delving into their contributions to flutter modal damping. The bimodal coupled flutter is then revisited based on a framework with closedform formulations that sheds more insights to the underlying physics of coupled flutter. This discussion was followed by a unified analysis framework of integrating both flutter and buffeting analysis that better points out the roles of both self-excited and buffeting forces on bridge response to wind fluctuations. Finally, the methodology for modeling equivalent static wind loading associated with multimode coupled buffeting is discussed with applications to bridge design.

Equivalent Static Wind Loads for Buffeting Response
In current design practice, the dynamic wind loads are described in terms of the equivalent static wind loads based on the gust response factor. This approach results in a distribution of the equivalent static loading similar to the mean static wind load distribution, which may not always be a physically meaningful and realistic load description. In this paper, the equivalent static load repres...

In current design practice, spatiotemporally varying wind loads on buildings are modeled as equivalent static wind loads. This loading description serves as pivotal information for estimating response under the combined action of wind and other loads. This paper presents a framework for evaluating the equivalent static wind load for any given peak response of buildings with uncoupled responses ...
متن کاملCoupled Dynamic Analysis and Equivalent Static Wind Loads on Buildings with Three-Dimensional Modes
Buildings with either complex geometric shapes or structural systems with noncoincident centers of mass and resistance, or both, may undergo three-dimensional ~3D! coupled motions when exposed to spatiotemporally varying dynamic wind loads. To capture the dynamic load effects, this paper presents a framework for the analysis of 3D coupled dynamic response of buildings and modeling of the equiva...
متن کاملEvaluation of Equivalent Static Wind Loads on Buildings
Wind loads on buildings can be quantified through synchronous measurements of pressure over building model surfaces or by high frequency force balance (HFFB) measurements. Although this loading information can be directly utilized for building design applications, current design practice often requires the transformation of dynamic wind loading to the equivalent static wind loads (ESWLs). This ...

Pedestrian bridge structures are usually sensitive to the effects of wind due to their relatively high slimness and low weight. The arising forces can excite both oscillation in the direction of the wind and also crosswise torsion-flexure oscillation which can result in a local or (in the case of coupled torsion-flexure oscillation) complete loss of aerodynamic stability of the structure. This ...
